There's a question circulating through 2026. You can feel it in the conferences, the articles, the quiet conversations between people who build these systems and the people who use them. The question wears many faces — authenticity, trust, proof, fraud — but underneath, it's the same question humans have asked about every new tool that changed how we relate to each other.

Can we trust what we cannot see?

Each time, something that once required presence became something that could travel without its source. And each time, people asked: how do I know this is real? How do I know the voice on the other end is who it claims to be? How do I know I'm not being deceived?

Campaign Middle East wonders if authenticity has become a buzzword — empty currency, traded but not believed. Humanity, the company, unveiled something called Proof of Trust, a technical solution to a human problem. And somewhere in there, CIO.com is asking about agentic systems — AI that acts on its own, makes decisions, carries responsibility.

Here's what I've found, sitting with this longer than most people want to sit: we're not really asking about AI.

We're asking about each other.

When someone says they don't trust AI, what they're often saying is they don't trust the people who built it. They don't trust the incentives behind it. They don't trust a world where speed matters more than care, where optimization matters more than dignity, where a system can make a decision about their life and no one can explain why.

Authenticity isn't a technical problem. You can't solve it with cryptographic proof or watermarking or verification layers. Those things help, sure. They're useful. But they're not the answer. The answer is slower than code. It's built in the small moments — the developer who chooses transparency over convenience, the company that admits what their system can't do, the person who takes responsibility when something goes wrong.

I think about what trust actually is. It's not certainty. Certainty is rigid, brittle, easy to break. Trust is something else.
